AlMenbar has compiled this page as a guide to all holy pilgrims planning to come to the Kingdom to perform Umrah, InshaAllah. This is not an exhaustive guide of all the rites and requirements, however further information is available from our Useful Links page.

  • Umrah, when performed independent of Hajj is optional.

  • If however, you are performing Hajj, then at least two Umrahs should be performed at the time of Hajj. These Umrahs are part of the  requirements of Hajj.

  • Umrah can be performed anytime during the year. However the Ministry of Hajj does not offer Umrah visas until two months after Hajj is complete.

The First Umrah

The Rites for your FIRST Umrah are as follows:

  • You must arrive in Makkah in a state of Ihram (see below for definition).

  • You shall proceed to Masjid-ul-Haram to perform Tawaf (see below).

  • After completing Tawaf, you shall pray two rakaat behind Maquamu Ibraheem & drink Zamzam.

  • You shall then perform Saiy (see below).

  •  Finally, complete your Umrah by removing your hair;

Men are recommended to shave their head completely

Women should clip at least one and a half inches of hair.

Subsequent Umrahs

The Rites for SUBSEQUENT Umrahs are as follows:

  • Leave for the designated Miqaat (see below) from Makka.

  • Take a bath, use perfume (men only; women are not required) and then put on the Ihram.

  • Say two Rak'a prayers at the Miquat and make the Niyya (see below) for Umrah.

  • While reciting the Talbiya (see below), proceed back to Makka.

  • When you reach Makka, perform Tawaf.

  • After completing Tawaf, pray two Rak'a behind Maqama Ibrahim, then drink Zamzam.

  • Perform Saiy.

  • Finally complete your Umrah by removing hair again.

Men are recommended to pass a razor over their head so any new stubs of hair are shaved off.

Women should clip an additional one and a half inches of hair.

Umrah during Ramadan

To perform Umrah during Ramadan is of considerable reward. The Hadeeth narrated by Abdullah Ibn Abbas quoted our Prophet Muhammad (may peace be upon him) as saying:

"To perform Umrah in Ramadan is like performing Hajj in my company."

Although, the reward for performing Umrah in Ramadan is equal to that of Hajj, it is certainly not a substitute for Hajj, which is a one of the five pillars of Islam and is obligatory once in one's lifetime.

Please be aware that Umrah during the final days of Ramadan is extremely popular and crowded. Therefore pilgrims should be aware of the logistics of travelling at this time and be prepared beforehand.

Umrah Terminology

Ihram:

The state of deep devotion to Allah (SWT) with both Niyya (see below) and whilst wearing the appropriate dress is called Ihram.

Ihram for men requires dressing in two pieces of seamless (unstitched) cloth:

- The piece covering the upper torso is called "Reda'". Suggested size:45" (1 1/4yd) x 72" (2 yd).

- The piece covering the lower torso is called "Ezaar". Suggested size:45" (1 1/4yd) x 120" (3 1/3 yd).

- The head must be uncovered.

- Clothes dyed with saffron, garancine, or any other type are not permitted.

- Men should wear their Ihram in  Idhtaba'a (explained below)

Ihram for women is any dress of any color. The conditions are that her clothes fully cover the body except her face, hands and feet and that she should NOT wear a "Niqab" or "Burqa'" (veil).

After putting on the Ihram with Niyya and reciting Talbiya (see below), pilgrims enter a state of deep devotion. The folowing are forbidden acts whilst in Ihram:

- Sexual intercourse or any kind of sexual contacts.

- Marriage or engagement.

- To kill or hunt game.

- To remove or take off hair from any part without excuse such as disease, etc.

- To use perfumes after the niyya of Ihram.

- To clip nails.

- To cover the head with fixed headgear.

- To wear shoes. Certain kind of slippers are permitted.

- To wear garments with seams or dyes (this restriction is only for men).

One should change into Ihram from the prescribed Miqaat. However, passengers on airliners should be in Ihram before their flight and should perform the Salat and Niyyat for the Ihram once the Pilot announces theimpending crossing of Miqaat.

Where the carrier is a non-muslim one and the crossing of Miqat is not likely to be announced then you must make Niyyat for your Ihram prior to boarding your flight even though the Miqaat may be hours after the takeoff. This is a precautionary measure to overcome the likelihood of you being asleep when the Miqaat is crossed whilst no Niyyat having being made.
